HOW ARE YOUR BERRY PRODUCTS PRODUCED?

after picking, the berries are frozen immediately and then carefully cleaned and checked in our production facility. we are meticulous about quality control standards, ensuring that we will only process and package the highest standard berries. we carry out production in accordance with the certified Food Safety Management System ISO 22000.

our berries are slowly dried in gentle temperatures of around 44ºC. the time it takes to complete the drying process varies from 1 to 3 days, depending on the type of berry.

berry powders - berries are slowly dried in low temperatures (42 to 46 ºC) and then ground into powder. nothing but water removed, nothing added.

dried berries - after carefully cleaning the berries we add a little sugar to the them. the berries are then rinsed and finally dried in low temperatures (42 to 46 ºC).

chocolate coated berries - dried berries are dipped into delicious dark or milk chocolate.

WHERE ARE THE BERRIES FROM?

all of the lingonberries and bilberries used in the biokia range are wild berries handpicked from clean, unpolluted finnish forests. the berries for the sea buckthorn and cranberry powder are sourced from the baltic countries and the dried cranberry is from north america.

HOW CAN I USE THE PRODUCTS?

our berry powders and dried berries are an excellent addition to any meal of the day; whether in a smoothie, yoghurt or salad. the choice is yours. they are also perfect for cooking and baking. the chocolate coated berries are a great treat on their own and you can also add them to desserts.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLUEBERRY AND BILBERRY?

blueberry and bilberry are very similar but they are not the same berry. bilberry is a native wild berry of the temperate and subarctic regions in europe whereas blueberry is a native of north america and mostly cultivated. they are different berries also what comes to size, taste and importantly nutritional value. blueberry is bigger, almost white / colourless inside and tastes sweeter. bilberry on the other hand, is smaller, dark blue inside and has a deeper taste. bilberry has much higher nutrient content than blueberry - it grows during light nights in the summer, which increases the anthocyanidin content (that gives the berry its dark colour). bilberry is famous for its high content of those anthocyanidins and antioxidants. in addition to acting as antioxidants and fighting free radicals, anthocyanidin may offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits.this is exactly why bilberry is higher valued - due to its rarity and exceptional nutritional value.

bilberry has also higher content of vitamins E and C than blueberry and its sugar content is lower than blueberry's (6.5 g/100 g vs 13-15g/100g)

CAN I GIVE BERRY POWDERS TO MY BABY?

our 100% natural berry powders are a wonderful way of adding berry nutrition (packed with vitamins and minerals) to your baby’s diet from six months. the powders are smooth and mix well with yoghurt or porridge - in fact with any pureed food. we advise to start by adding a few sprinkles to a meal while you introduce our berrilicious powders to your baby.

HOW MUCH BERRIES DO YOU USE IN YOUR 30G POUCHES OF BERRY POWDERS? 

fresh berries contain a lot of water, in fact, about 90%. during the drying process we reduce the water content to 15%. our berry powders are packed with berry goodness with nothing taken out and nothing added.

DO YOU USE ANY ADDITIVES?

our berry powders are 100% natural, wild super berries. no sugar, no additives. no badness.

berries contain naturally occurring sugars and we add a little sugar (the amount of sugar is presented on packaging) to our dried berries before drying, for a soft and juicy texture and taste. the added sugar brings out the berry flavour. according to latest studies, sugar that is consumed with berries is not as bad for us than sugar consumed without berries! that’s because the berries polyphenolic compounds are seen to balance blood sugar and insulin levels. even more reasons to eat our berry goodies.

the chocolate coated berries contain some additives typical to chocolate products and they are listed on the packaging.

CAN I SOAK THE DRIED BERRIES?

our berries are ready to be consumed and you don’t have to soak them. by all means you’re welcome to do so if you wish!

DO THE CHOCOLATE COATED BERRIES CONTAIN LACTOSE? 

the dark organic chocolate of our chocolate coated cranberries is lactose free. the milk chocolate coated berries contain lactose and the quantity is presented on packaging.

WHERE CAN I BUY THE BIOKIA RANGE? 

finnberry is proud to be the exclusive distributor of biokia berry range in the uk and we’re distributing the full range right here from our website. the products are also available through amazon and we are working with selected retailer partners to be able to offer the range through supermarkets and health food stores.

HOW LONG DO THE PRODUCTS KEEP? 

the shelf life of our berry powders is 24 months while the dried berries and chocolate coated berries keep 12 months. please check the batch date from your packaging.

IS THE LECITHIN (E322) IN CHOCOLATE COATED BERRIED DERIVED FROM SOY? 

our milk chocolate coated berrries contain soy lecithin from chocolate. we’re not aware of any allergic reactions caused by soy lecithin in our chocolate coated berries.

(small print! soy lecithin possesses emulsification properties and this means it can keep a chocolate bar together by making sure that the cocoa and the cocoa butter don’t separate. soy lecithin (also marked as e322) is extracted from soybeans either mechanically or chemically using hexane. it’s actually a byproduct of the soybean oil production.)

CAN I EAT TOO MANY OF YOUR BERRIES?

the amount of berries you can consume is very individual. the dried berries are high in fibre, so we recommend introducing our products to your diet gradually at first, especially if you have a sensitive tummy.

the good news is that there is no harm to your health by eating a lot of berries! we advise using a tea spoon or two of berry powders and a small handful of dried berries each day. our dried berry products are highly concentrated and these small amounts offer just the same benefits as a handful of fresh berries.

I'M ALLERGIC TO NUTS! CAN I ENJOY CHOCOLATE COATED BERRIES SAFELY? 

absolutely. our chocolate coated berries are produced in our factory where we don’t handle any nuts.

the dried cranberries are produced in a factory where nuts are handled on a separate production line with a minimum risk of cross contamination. we don’t have a warning on our packaging as the risk is almost non-existent.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BERRIES?

our berries are exceptionally rich in vitamins A, B, C and E and they’re packed with antioxidants that can help destroy free radicals. free radicals are substances that cause cell damage, which, over time, can increase your risk of diseases, such as cancer. they are also responsible for skin ageing. you can read more about the boosting benefits of our wild nordic super berries in our ‘berry benefits’ section.

CAN BERRIES BE HARMFUL TO MY HEALTH? 

if you are taking warfarin (commonly used to treat or prevent thromboembolic events) we would advise you to speak with your GP as there have been studies about the effect of cranberry and warfarin. cranberries have been suggested to have an interaction with warfarin.
